New Funding Supports Plastic Bottle Recycling During Mardi Gras

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Louisiana Beverage Association and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America have provided a $25,000 grant to Recycle Dat!, an initiative led by Grounds Krewe, to expand recycling efforts during Carnival Season.

“Mardi Gras is a time for Louisiana and New Orleans to shine, which makes it even more important to ensure we do our part to get every bottle back,” said Keli Williams, executive director of the Louisiana Beverage Association. “We’re proud to help reduce waste and promote recycling in Louisiana, especially as our community and visitors come together for Carnival Season.”

“We’re thrilled to see this initiative grow and make a broader impact during this celebration,” said Brett Davis, founding director of Grounds Krewe. “This wouldn’t be possible without our partners and their dedication to keeping our communities clean.”

Historically focused on Mardi Gras beads, aluminum and glass, Recycle Dat! launched a plastic bottle pilot program in 2024 with the Osprey Initiative, capturing 236 pounds of plastic bottles or approximately 6,139 bottles. This grant builds on that success and helps deliver on the Recycle Dat! goal of promoting a more sustainable carnival season. All material collected can be recycled and used again.

This work aligns with the beverage industry’s efforts to reduce their use of new plastic by helping build a system where more of their packaging is collected, recycled and remade into new products. Beverage bottles and cans are carefully designed to be 100% recyclable so they can be remade into new ones and stay out of landfills and the environment.

If you are looking to get involved, RecycleDat! will be operating March 1-2 during the Uptown Parades. More information about RecycleDat! and volunteer opportunities can be found here
