While much of the country has already been feeling the frigid temperatures, today marks the official first day of winter. Did you ever wonder why the winter solstice was the shortest day and longest night for the Northern Hemisphere?  What that means is the Earth's axis is tilted away from the sun, minimizing the sunlight (and thus, daytime) for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. And after today, the days will get longer and the nights will get shorter until the summer solstice in June.

We at Sip & Savor diligently blogged on nutrition and health throughout the summer and into the fall, but it’s important to keep moving despite the busy winter season. Getting creative with your activities can double as productive (try shoveling snow!) or exhilarating (any downhill skiing nearby?) or even educational (take the kids for a hike to check out the temperate coniferous or deciduous plants).

Regardless of the weather, it’s important to stay active. These suggested activities can help keep you in the mindset as you celebrate the holidays.
