Here in Washington, D.C., many of us are raving about the unseasonably warm weather, while media outlets across America cover the government shutdown. Regardless of how you feel about the weather or politics for that matter, one thing we can all reflect on together is the history of today, October 3.

We can thank President Abraham Lincoln for proclaiming, on this very day in 1863, a national day of Thanksgiving.  More recently on this very day, East and West Germany become one – again. Twenty years ago, this was a day of sadness as two U.S. Special Forces Helicopters – Black Hawks – were shot down in Somalia.

So what’s our point?  Each day is filled with a rich history of events, big and small.  So, too, is the history of America’s non-alcoholic beverage industry.  With companies spanning more than 100 years and others still in their infancy, as well as refreshing choices in myriad flavors, portions, calories and more, the innovation of this industry keeps all of us at Sip & Savor inspired every day.  For a quick look at the history of soft drinks, check out this timeline on About.com.
