We’ve all been there, we’d like something sweet to sip but we’re looking to cut down on calories. Amber Groeling, a dietitian at Topeka’s Hy-Vee says “[n]on-caloric sweeteners are another option to please your sweet tooth.”
Also known as sugar substitutes, low- and no-calorie sweeteners are found in products all over the grocery store, including beverages. So, are they safe? Yes! Groeling notes, “All of the sweeteners that are available on the market have been approved by the FDA as safe.”
In fact, sugar substitutes are among the most researched ingredients on the market. Even the World Health Organization and the European Food Safety Authority have concluded that they are safe to consume.
Research has also found that sugar substitutes can be used as an effective tool for both weight loss and weight maintenance while providing sweetness and refreshment. Enjoy!
