A few weeks ago the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America (ABFHA) announced Las Vegas, Nev., as the first place winner in the large city category of the 2017 Childhood Obesity Prevention Awards. For the past six years, USCM in partnership with ABFHA has provided grants to help support mayors’ efforts to address the childhood obesity in their cities.

In Las Vegas, Nev., Mayor Carolyn Goodman is tackling childhood obesity with the “Healthy School, Healthy Life” program. The program aims to provide children with nutrition education and physical activity through a positive hands-on approach to cooking and exercise and fitness programs based on the First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let's Move’ initiative. The program also includes a “Pop-Up Produce” program that provides students and families with a five-pound bag of fruits and vegetables and a recipe that teaches the participants how to cook with the ingredients.

Congratulations to the city of Las Vegas and Mayor Carolyn Goodman! Healthy School, Healthy Life program will provide their community with information and tools needed to drive meaningful results.
