Today, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) – the EU’s regulatory agency on food safety – released a draft opinion report reaffirming what we have published here on Sip & Savor time and time again: aspartame is safe.

Today’s study delivers nothing new; just confirms, once again, what we have known since the FDA originally approved aspartame in the 1980s. In a statement, EFSA described their findings:

EFSA’s scientific experts have drawn upon all available information on aspartame and its breakdown products and, following a detailed and methodical analysis, have concluded in this draft opinion that they pose no toxicity concern for consumers at current levels of exposure. The current Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is considered to be safe for the general population and consumer exposure to aspartame is below this ADI.

An ingredient found in many beverages as well as thousands of foods, aspartame has been deemed safe for decades by the world’s leading toxicologists, as well as other regulatory agencies and public health experts around the world. In fact, it is one of the most thoroughly tested ingredients of all time with more than 200 scientific studies confirming its safety.
