Last month, as part of the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthier America’s ongoing partnership with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, six cities were awarded grants to fight childhood obesity in their community. Among them, was the city of Houston, Tex. for Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Get Moving Houston Farmers Market (GMHFM).

With this grant, Mayor Turner aims to expand their goal of bringing locally-sourced fresh fruits and vegetables, and nutrition education, to communities with limited access to grocery stores and other fresh food retail outlets, by operating six farmers market sites throughout Houston, all located within or near low access, low income areas.

It is programs like GMHFM that we can have a real and lasting impact on the health and wellness of communities nationwide. To learn more about the GMHFM program, click here.
