Though the carnivals have already begun in a few places, today is Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras in French. As a day to indulge in rich foods and celebrations, it marks the beginning of the Lenten season in the Christian tradition.

Often Mardi Gras is associated with New Orleans, a historical and cultural landmark known for French roots, Cajun dialect and Creole and Cajun cuisine.  Other cities known for Mardi Gras celebrations are Rio de Janeiro, Venice and Cologne all with their own twist on the festivities.

Mardi Gras is a reminder that moderation plays an important role in a healthy lifestyle.
