Labor Day is a time to get in that final summer bash with family and friends and pay tribute to the men and women who make this country work every day.

The holiday can be traced back to a parade organized by the labor movement in New York City in 1882. According to Linda Stinson, a former historian for the Department of Labor, the parade drew in such a large crowd that newspapers declared it a huge success and “a day of the people.” Labor Day became a national holiday under President Grover Cleveland in 1894.

Today the holiday heralds the start of the school year, football and brisk weather. But let’s remember the intent of the holiday by raising a glass of your favorite beverage to the work ethic that has made America great.

We at Sip & Savor hope you enjoy the day by relaxing and soaking in the last of the summer weather.
