Today is Halloween. A holiday we normally associate with jack-o’-lanterns, costumes and trick-or-treating, but there are a lot of fun facts about the holiday that we don’t really talk about. Here are 5 things you might not know about Halloween that you can share with your friends and family tonight.

Halloween is also known as All Hallows’ Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool Snap-Apple Night, Samhain and Summer’s End. The fear of Halloween is called samhainophobia. The tradition of dressing up on Halloween comes from the Celts. The Celts believed Halloween or Samhain was when the wall between the human and paranormal world would become blurred and the costumes would help people hide from the spirits. Halloween has been celebrated for more than 6,000 years. Cats are associated with Halloween because people once believed that cats protected the powers of witches.
