It was on this day--June 6, 1944--67 years ago that Allied troops stormed Normandy's beaches, the turning point in World War II for the liberation of France and the ultimate defeat of the Nazis.  The years may have passed, but the stories of thousands of heroic young men endure. After crossing the English Channel, they fought their way onto the beaches.  U.S. Army Rangers miraculously scaled the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc.

Today as in past years, veterans who fought on D-Day made the journey to France.  But the numbers have dwindled with the decades and as fewer World War II veterans remain living.  Those who have made the journey back to Normandy relive the memories and they pay their respects to the more than 9,000 buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial overlooking Omaha Beach.

Here at home, many more are sharing their stories with local newspapers and TV stations and at community events observing the anniversary.  You can learn of those stories with a quick online news search.  And for those would like to learn more about this pivotal day in world history, the U.S. Army and the History Channel are but two of the online resources available.

We at Sip & Savor join Americans across the country in taking a moment today to remember the valor of those who served.
