Today, the New York State Supreme Court effectively put an end to New York City's proposed soda ban, with one judge saying that it was "fraught with arbitrary and capricious consequences" and would be difficult, if not impossible, to enforce.

But perhaps even more importantly, the court's decision upholds a principle that most of us already believe in- freedom of choice. Individuals are the ones with the power to choose what foods and beverages are right for them, and no one-size-fits-all policy can or should infringe on that decision, no matter how well-intentioned it may be.

We all agree in the need to promote health and wellness. But health cannot be legislated, mandated or decreed- it must be learned and practiced by individuals.

When it comes to leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle, the verdict is in, and thankfully the choice is still yours.
