Did you know that it was on this day in 1884 that the construction of one of the most well-known landmarks in the United States was completed?  That’s right – the Washington Monument, which towers above the rest of the Washington, D.C.,  skyline turns 128 years old today!

It’s a gigantic structure made of some 36,000 marble and granite blocks.  The monument stands 555 feet tall, and is located at the western end of the national mall.  It took about six months after opening for the first 10,000 people to take the steps to the top.  And during the summer months, tourists still flock to snap photos and see its mammoth size.

While the Washington Monument is temporarily closed due to an earthquake that struck the area last year, visitors can still enjoy the museums and other activities around the mall and monument area year round.
