The beverage industry along with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is working in communities across the country to work toward the goal of reducing beverage calories consumed per person nationally by 20 percent by 2025.
We are proud to say that the Iowa Beverage Association (IBA), its member companies and partner organizations are going to work toward that goal as a way to support the efforts of Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.
On Tuesday, IBA the Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA) and Iowa Games announced they would work together on “Balance Calories Iowa.” This initiative aims to encourage Iowans to “Balance What You Eat, Drink & Do” as a great way to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
As part of the effort, IBA and IGIA will engage in consumer outreach efforts to increase awareness of the wide array of no- and lower-calorie beverage choices and smaller portion sizes available. The beverage industry will be placing calorie counts and calorie awareness promotions on all company-controlled point-of-sale equipment throughout Iowa, including vending machines, self-serve fountain dispensers and retail coolers in convenience stores.
“By working together in public-private partnerships we will reach our goal of being number one in well-being,” said Branstad. “We’re excited to see the beverage and grocery industries take another step in helping us accomplish our goals by encouraging Iowans to be physically active and mindful of their food and beverage choices.”
Lt. Gov. Reynolds added: “If Iowa is to become the healthiest state in the nation, our citizens must take ownership of their own health. Making the right choice the easy choice will allow Iowans to make informed decisions. We commend the Iowa Beverage Association, the Iowa Grocery Industry Association and the Iowa Summer Games for their continued support to make Iowa number one in the nation. ”
Public-private partnerships are key to addressing complex societal issues such as obesity. We at Sip and Savor congratulate Iowa on taking steps to work toward solutions that will have real and lasting results.
