As the new school year begins, school children across America are stowing away their bathing suits and donning their back-to-school clothes. A new school year brings a lot of change - new teachers and classes, opportunities to try out for a sports team or act in the school play, the list goes on. And, as part of our industry’s commitment, the new school year also means fewer beverage calories available in schools nationwide.
A recent analysis published in the American Journal of Public Health confirms that the beverage industry has successfully removed full-calorie soft drinks, replacing them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion options. In 2006, the beverage industry worked with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to establish School Beverage Guidelines that limit portion sizes and reduce the number of beverage calories available to children in schools. In fact, since 2004, there are 90 percent fewer beverage calories in schools.
