It's becoming more apparent as of late that Americans are focusing on their diet and exercise routines. The 2010 Food & Health Survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation found that some 70 percent of respondents say they are concerned about how much they weigh, while 77 percent say they are trying to lose or maintain their current weight. Most report changing the amounts they eat, the type of foods they eat and are making a point of being physically active.
Unfortunately, an overwhelming number of those surveyed know very little about calories and fail to factor in calories consumed versus calories burned. Only 12 percent could accurately estimate the number of calories they should consume in a day. And while they are engaging in physical activities, some 77 percent did not meet the federal government's Physical Activity Guidelines.
We at Sip & Savor congratulate those Americans who are already paying attention to their weight, and understand the importance of balanced nutrition and exercise. And we encourage all Americans to learn more about their caloric needs, as well as the importance of calorie balance.
After all, we know that it all comes down to balancing calories in and calories out - that is what matters when it comes to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight.
To help further inform consumers about the calories in their favorite beverages, our industry announced a new initiative earlier this year - Clear on Calories. In support of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let’s Move!" campaign to combat childhood obesity, our companies voluntarily committed to put calorie information on the front of all their packaging, as well as company-controlled vending machines and fountain machines. Beginning this fall, consumers will have calorie information available at their fingertips at every point of purchase.
