Last week, we announced a new partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to reduce calories consumed from beverages by 20 percent by 2025. Some of our industry’s critics have suggested that consumption of our products has been on the decline in recent years and therefore this goal is insignificant. We disagree. Increased innovation by our member companies will be key as we work aggressively toward this goal. Even sales of bottled water, which has become extremely popular with consumers in recent years, isn’t seeing the same growth as it did just a year or two ago.
In order to ensure that we continue to see a reduction in beverage calories consumed, it will take our member companies working together and leveraging their marketing and distribution strengths to promote smaller portion sizes, water, and no- and lower- calorie beverage options. In the next 10 years, the beverage landscape will be vastly different than it is now. When you walk down the beverage aisle in your local supermarket or convenience store, there will be more options in more sizes so that you can make the choice that is right for you.
Through our work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation we have seen that we can achieve real results that have a lasting impact, and we look forward to continuing to lead the fight against obesity over the next 10 years and beyond.
