In its early years and in years of resurgence, the practice of recycling was the direct effect of resource shortages (think: wartime campaigns for metals and other products). Currently, recycling, though a relatively standard practice, is often promoted as a way for us to do our part to preserve the planet for future generations. Despite accessibility, some people still do not participate.

Saying that every little bit counts might seem trite, but did you know that recycling one aluminum can will save enough energy to run a television for three hours? It’s a simple fact that illustrates a profound impact.

The Onion, an online satirical news publication, published a piece this week titled, "'How Bad for the Environment Can Throwing Away One Plastic Bottle Be?' 30 Million People Wonder." You do not even need to read the article to get the point. In describing the "inner monologues" of 30 million people, the piece highlights the flippant attitude underlying, or at least contributing to, a larger issue.

Our industry is committed to doing its part. We are using 100 percent recyclable packaging as well as promoting the practice of recycling, but we also need committed consumers. Don’t make the mistake that skipping the recycle bin with your container doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things or that you are the only one making an exception on any given day.

Remember - Think Inside the Bin.
